Feasability studies (1982 - present)
- Conducted a feasibility study on construction and operations of a wood pellet mill and port facilities in Alaska. Timber supply was evaluated as part of the study.
- Conducted a feasibility study on increased road construction, intensive forestry projects,purchase of logging equipment and training for a First Nation in northern
B.C.
Business Planning and Management
(1985 - present)
- Prepared business plans for investment in forest nurseries for a First Nation.
- Managed professional foresters, forest technologists and part-time forestry staff.
This included technical training and project performance assessments in
silviculture, forest inventory and timber valuation.
- Marketed the consulting firm, including development of brochures, technical and financial proposals.
Industrial Appraisal ( 1991, 2005)
- Reviewed the woodlands practices and performed a financial valuation on a large forestry company in the southern Philippines, as part of a team. The company
employed 10,000 people and harvested 1 000 000 m3 of round wood annually.
- Valued specialty solid wood products business for a First Nation joint venture with a secondary wood products manufacturer.
Forest Appraisal (1999 - present)
- Conducted numerous timber valuation projects for both public and private clients in Canada, Central America, Peru and the Philippines (over 100 appraisals).
- Prepared timber valuations on harvested timber on specific land claims for three First Nations groups. Two of the valuations related to harvest during the early 1900's.
- Appraised the timber value for a land exchange between the Canadian
Government, the B.C. Ministry of Lands and two major integrated forest products companies.
- Assessed the difference in future timber value among alternative silviculture investment strategies, including forest fertilization on public forests in the Fraser
Valley, B.C.
- Performed/managed timber appraisals on 90 private properties and 12 timber licences owned by a major forest company on the BC coast and Vancouver Island.
- Assisted in the development of a fair valuation methodology for forest land during the preliminary negotiations between the Government of Canada and the BC Government regarding First Nations treaty issues. A survey was carried out and analysed for potential valuation methodologies. Recommendations were presented to help develop a group of formulas to be used during treaty negotiations.
Expert Testimony Timber Evaluation
(1997 - present)
- Provided expert testimony in court on behalf of a client whose timber had beencut without permission by a neighbor. I estimated lost timber value and costs to
rehabilitate the land. Results of the action were awards of both specific costs for damages and punitive damages to the client.
- Assisted lawyers in defense of forest land owners regarding timber disputes.
Latin American Forestry business development and investment research (1997 - 2008)
- Provided in-country research in Mexico for a Canadian forest company with a view to expand their business. Reviewed a 4000 ha farm in Mexico for another company.
- Analyzed land suitable for forest farming in Costa Rica for two Canadian companies.
- Assessed the operational and social feasibility of a 12 million tree reforestation project in Guatemala. I performed the on-site inspection of the 1000 ha property
and assessed project viability on behalf of the project manager, a Canadian reforestation company.
- Assessed existing forest values and prepared a reforestation program and financial plan to expand the forest area on a 2700 ha farm in Guatemala.
Environmental/Forest Compliance Auditing
(1987 - present)
- Audited harvesting, road construction and deactivation, forest health, planning and silviculture practices of the British Columbia BC Timber Sales program and many
forest companies across BC and Alberta. Over 100 audits have been conducted,focussing on protection of water bodies, soil and wildlife habitat. Both compliance to regulations and effectiveness in maintaining environmental protection were included. Audited to ISO 14001-04, CSA(SFM) Z809, SFI and FSC standards.
- Team leader and/or project manager for six of Ontario’s forest management audits (Upper and Lower Spanish, Spanish Forest, Sapawe, Crossroute, and Black River Forest.)
- Participated in review of combining CSA(SFM) and FSC requirements with the Ontario Independent Forest Audit Protocol and Procedure.
- Audited the 1996 harvesting and road operational practices of a major coastal forest company’s tree farm license for the Forest Practices Board of BC.
- Foreign: Mexico-country wide research project on the environmental impacts of agriculture on soil and forest cover. Peru-forest inventory audit.
- Reviewed harvesting and road building operations and their impact on fisheries
- Audited the timber utilization practices of a major forest company on the Queen Charlotte Islands for the executive branch of the B.C. Ministry of Forests (MOF).
Urban/Rural Environmental Review (1979 - present)
- Reviewed development issues, provided environmental expertise to local
government as a member of a community association. Agencies included the Capital Regional District (landfill issues) and municipal planners (development permits, local area plans).
- Prepared a fire hazard interface analysis report on the forests in and around a proposed residential development.
Environmental consulting/auditing (1999 - 2002)
- Provided consulting regarding planning and implementing forest certification for a major forest company and the BC MOF. As lead auditor, conducted ISO 14001
implementation and awareness audits for two forest companies and six BC MOF Districts. Assisted in designing audit programs/policy/training for three other organizations. Assisted in preparation of auditing manuals for the MOF and the Land Reserve Commission of BC and wrote audit sections of environmental manuals for two companies.
Environmental watershed planning
(1979 - present)
- Developed watershed environmental impact assessments and prepared
prescriptions for remedial work on affected streams, riparian areas, landslides and
roads (14 projects). These were in two Forest Regions in British Columbia.
- Delivered papers (in Mexico, in Spanish) on watershed restoration techniques at international symposia.
- Prepared many forest development plans to minimize environmental impacts. Trained logging staff to minimize logging and road impacts on soil and water.
Contract Management Assistance ( 1996 - 1998 )
- Assisted in the contract management of a training and enhanced forestry project assistance on Central Vancouver Island. I provided internal consultation to Forest Renewal
BC and liaison among the forest licensee, FRBC and the MoF. Assisted First Nations,forest licensees, individuals, and consultants in understanding FRBC policy.
Assesments of Provincial Road issues (1998)
- Prepared a “policy issues” paper regarding forest roads in BC. Principal issues included 1) eligibility for Forest Renewal BC funding for deactivation, 2) public issues relations regarding changes in road access and 3) training for the 1998 FRBC funding model. Estimates of forest road length for the entire province were made using existing annual reports and surveys of Ministry of Forests and licensee staff.
Forest Engineering (1986 - present)
- Field designed and laid out 25 km of forest road in Alaska with biologists and other resource professionals to comply with both economic and environmental
objectives.
- Laid out forest roads to access harvesting blocks on Vancouver Island.
- Reviewed existing road conditions on treaty settlement lands for a First Nation.
Forest Harvesting (1980 - present)
- Planned and supervised contract harvesting operations. This work included reforestation and log marketing.
- Prepared harvest/silviculture development plans for forest licences, woodlot licences and private lands. One such plan involved the delineation of practical
Silviculture (1980 - present)
- Managed a variety of intensive and basic silviculture projects located in all of the major forest biogeoclimatic zones in B.C.
- Provided internal project management consulting to a government agency
responsible for delivering incremental silviculture programs.
Resource Inventory (1988 - present)
- Provided photo and aerial interpretation, mapping, and plot layout for two(large re-inventories (700 000 and 2 000 000 ha) in northern B.C. During the project, trained foresters in photo interpretation and field techniques. Both projects included GIS mapping.
- Conducted assessments of tree decay losses in north coastal BC.
Forest Management (1982 - present)
- Planned and executed an environmental, social and forest inventory on First Nation land (20 000 ha). Training of First Nation members was a major part of the project. Subsequent to the inventory, a management and working plan was prepared and delivered to the council. I was also responsible for planning and executing six other projects of this type for other First Nation clients.
- During 1982, prepared a management and working plan (including a
computerized yield analysis using a linear computer program) for the first new tree farm licence issued in B.C. since 1965.
- Prepared forest management plans (companies, private owners and First
Nations.)
Resource Analysis (1992)
- Analyzed timber supply quality and quantity for a major forest company in the interior of British Columbia. This was prepared on behalf of a financing (1992) agency underwriting the purchase of the company's mills and timber supply.
Tropical Forest Management (1992)
- Reviewed government forest management in Honduras and prepared in
depth proposals for forest management plans, policy development and forest operations standards.
Social Forestry (1979 - 2008)
- Analyzed new forest management regulations in Honduras on how
privatization would affect the rural poor living within forested areas. To this end, I researched statistics on tropical forested land and rural population, interviewed community leaders and reviewed the national forestry department’s efforts in social forestry projects.
- Analyzed the relationships between companies, governments and First Nations regarding FN goals to become involved in natural resource management.
- Supervised silviculture projects including planning and developing work
Mediator (1987 - 1990)
- Mediated disputes between the MoF and forest licensees about the collection,interpretation and reporting of wood residue (three sites, Coastal BC).
Education (1992 - 2004)
- Prepared and delivered papers on forest management (in Spanish) to
professional groups in Uruguay and Argentina.
- Prepared and delivered a paper on watershed restoration (in Spanish) at a national protected area conference in Mexico.
- Trained many First Nations in silviculture and forest inventory across BC.
- Delivered lectures and workshops on tropical forestry, the Forest Practices Code and environmental and forestry auditing to students and practicing forest
engineers.
- Trained auditors.
Masters of Science Studies (1989 - 1991)
- Completed Master's course studies including statistics, tropical inventory, dendrology, silviculture (plantation and natural tropical forests), economics, agroforestry, tropical soils, forest products marketing and rural development
surveys and assessments.
Trainer, Silviculture (1985 -1986)
- Trained forest technicians and foresters in silvicultural practices in a forestry bureau in north-eastern China as part of a team on an integrated development project.
Fuelwood survey (1984)
- Designed and carried out a fuelwood supply survey (inventory) for two Canadian west coast cities (Vancouver and Victoria).
